Roller Skating Project
Here at Salam, we believe in the value of Sport and Play-based activities, recognised in the UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals for their “promotion of tolerance and respect and the contributions [they] makes to the empowerment of women and of young people, individuals and communities as well as to health, education and social inclusion objectives.”
Thanks to Salam UK, we run weekly Roller Skating lessons for children aged 8-14. On a specially levelled playground at our center, students are taught from zero the basics of Roller Skating, improving their balance and bodily awareness until they are confident enough to independently skate. Once independent skaters, our Skate coordinator introduces more advanced moves with the support of the specialised application My Skate Pro.
The impact of sport and play-based activities such as Roller Skating cannot be underestimated on the overall wellbeing of children suffering from extreme poverty, from both refugee and Lebanese communities. Such activities provide children and youth with regular access to safe spaces where they can get support from peers and from trained staff, relationships which can act as a protective factor in young people’s lives, contributing to stability, familiarity and normalcy, which young people need in order to thrive.
In 2023 the Salam UK Roller Skating project reached over 50 children.
